What is the science behind plasma balls?

My daughter has a science project she's working on and we wanted to do it on static electricity. I remember seeing plasma balls in science museums when I was a kid along with Van de Graaff generators. Since a Van de Graaff generator costs over $100 were looking for something a little more affordable. Does a plasma ball work on static electricity, electromagnetism or what?
